The “MyHTHology” Project

The goal of MyHTHology is to remind students that "Greek God"-like figures are still among us today in the form of comic book superheroes and supervillans. Characters have superpowers that either manipulate or defy a Physics Concept. For example, Superman defies gravity when he flies.

Scope of Work

Every team of two (2) students is responsible for creating two (2) super characters from an assigned Physics Concept. They could either be a dynamic duo or sworn enemies. The following materials & tools will be provided for innovation:
-- 11" x 14" Card Stock
-- 8.5" x 11" Paper
-- Scissors
-- Glue Sticks
-- Macromedia Adobe Photoshop
-- Microsoft Powerpoint

Deliverables

Team Powerpoint Presentation & Individual Digital Portfolios (DP) must include:
-- Character with Super Symbol
-- Superpowers Explained
-- Secret Identity
-- Partner or Nemesis History

Requirements

The Character Representations must:
-- Be a full-color hand drawing, magazine collage, or original graphic file
-- Show the Character in Action with Super Symbol
-- Have the appropriate Character Name nearby

The Super Symbol must:
-- Relate to the Physics Concept
-- Be visible on the costume

The Superpowers Explained must:
-- Discuss in detail how the Physics Concept is manipulated or defied
-- Have the important applicable equations, labeled variables, and units
-- Describe the supporting simple physics concepts

The Secret Identity must:
-- Be a profession that uses or is effected by the Physics Concept
-- Include an explanation regarding how the Physics Concept is used in the profession
-- Have a proper name

The Partner or Nemesis History must:
-- Explain how their Physics Concepts make them either perfect partners or enemies
-- Have a brief explanation of how and why they became partners or enemies

The Powerpoint Presentation must:
-- Explain all the above with Pictures and bulleted points
-- Be 4-5 minutes in length (no shorter or longer)
-- Involve both team members (equal distribution of time)
** Extra Credit to the students that present in Full-Costume

The Digital Portfolio must:
-- Have a reflection about the project from an academic and teamwork perspective
-- Have images of the Characters
-- Have the Powerpoint Presentation accessible via a hyperlink

Grading Criteria

The students will be working in teams of two (2), but they will each receive an individual grade. The varying weights for the following criteria will determine their overall score.
-- Use and Explanation of Physics Concept
-- Thoroughness & Thoughtfulness
-- Work Ethic & Behavior
-- Character Creativity
-- Deadlines and Deliverables
-- <Student Determined>
-- <Student Determined>

**The Rubric will be student-driven.

Safety

By participating in MyHTHology, the students are agreeing to all the safety issues discussed in class, which mainly means they will not run with scissors in their hands.
